Book Gems – Class 9 Love to Read

Today Miss Perkins introduced Class 9 to the idea of writing Book Gems.

Book Gems are amazing and memorable quotes or sentences that we find and discover in the books that we read.

The children looked for their very own Book Gems this afternoon and WOW… What a fantastic range of Gems they have found!!

Class 9 then got comfortable on cushions and beanbags, while Miss Perkins treated them to several spooky short stories.

The children had a SCREAM!!!

VOLCANOES!!

This half term Class 9 have been learning all about volcanoes. They have done some extensive research using the iPads to help them understand what a volcano is and how they are formed.

Class 9 havee made a fantastic labelled volcano display. Not only have they made a fantastic and detailed dispay, but they have also made their very own volcanoes from modroc.

Today Class 9 had the pleasure of watching their volcanoes erupt, using red food colouring, vinegar and bicarbonate of soda. The results were AMAZING!!!!!

Get Caught Reading

This morning in Year 5 we decided to magpie an idea from Miss Follands class. We started the morning with quiet, independent reading to see how long we could read for whilst sitting still and quiet. We wanted to see if we could break Miss Follands class record of just over 26 minutes. As a year group we have decided that we liked this start to the morning.

We were able to read books that we had chosen and were interested in, sustained reading over an extended period of time and enjoyed the silence! We were able to read for 32 minutes and only stopped because Mrs Willetts had lots of other tasks for us to do and actually wanted to carry on as we were enjoying our reading so much. We would certainly like to do this activity again soon and thought that we would like to bring the book that we are reading at home to school to continue reading our own books.

We think that we could extend our time and will let you know our new time when we do it again.

Ecton Brook Goes Wild…..grrrrr!!

This week we have started our entry for the Wild in Art Safari Northampton Event. This is a similar event to the one that we took part in a couple of years ago when we decorated a lion for the Pride of Northampton.

This year Northampton are holding a Safari in the town centre and a range of wild animal sculptures will be on display around the town and within the Grosvenor Centre. We have chosen a gorilla and have started to decorate him. All of the children within the school will have helped to decorate and make our entry very special.

Although we can’t give away our top secret idea just yet, we can show you how far we have got and some of the elements of our sculpture. Our sculpture will be on display in the Grosvenor Centre from the 16th of June, so look out for him in the Grosvenor Centre when you are in town shopping. I am sure that you won’t be able to miss him!!!

Sporting Young Leaders have the skills to lead younger children on the playground and during playtimes. They will be able to use their leadership skills to lead out in games and outdoor activities.

The children have been learning lots about what makes a good leader.

“So far today we learned about what you need to be a good leader. You must have a clear voice, you group need to be able to see you, and shouldn’t give too many long instructions.” – Robyn

The children have also discussed the importance of communication, safety, responsibility, co-operation, enjoyment and organisation .

Maths Buddies

Over the last few days, in Maths, we have started to work with Maths buddies. Maths buddies gives us the chance to work with a partner that we don’t usually work with in Maths and can support our learning of calculation methods. This week we talked about methods for division and shared the methods that we have used. Year 5 have found this helpful because their partner was able to support and extend learning and we helped each other to understand the concept. We are going to be able to talk to this partner about work we have found challenging in Maths and partners will be able to support each other to overcome any misconceptions.
